Currently, broadband access service becomes the new and grown-up telecommunication business step by step. Since EPON has some good advantages such as: good compatibility with Ethernet, high bandwidth, long distance transmitting capability, passive unit, and low cost, etc. Briefly speaking, EPON is a good solution for broadband access. EPON has some kinds of working mode according to user’s requirement:

1: FTTC (Fiber-To-The-Curb): Passive splitter is located out of the house; ONU is located on the curb. This mode is used for normal residential area. A set of OLT can cover lots of users for the maximum distance between OLT and ONU is 20 kilometers. In general, connecting a Layer 2 switch or VDSL equipment to the ONU to share the bandwidth, can greatly decrease the access cost of each single user. EPON system is easy to upgrade, which is helpful for setting nodes according to user’s real demand, so to protect carriers’ first investment.

2. FTTB (Fiber-To-The-Building): Passive splitter is out of the building, ONU is located in the building. Some of high-class buildings which are not easy to install the ONU in the home, EPON+VDSL system can be adopted. ONU+VDSL equipment can be installed in the building.

3. Fiber to each building Floor: Passive splitter is located out of the building; ONU is located on each floor. This mode is suitable for high-class building and can provide the high-speed and stable broadband access to customers in the commercial building.

4. FTTD (Fiber-To-The-Desk): Passive splitter is located in the building; ONU is located on the table of the user. This mode is used for the high-class villa and FTTH user. In this case, each customer can enjoy 100M bandwidth Internet service.

From these modes, customers can select any broadband access which speed is from the slow to the fast, and can also select any service which cost is from the low to the high. According to customers’ requirement, operator can provide many varieties of mode at the same time.

5. LAN access solution is mainly used for the establishment of information community (Mansion). 
The present LAN access structure needs to set Ethernet Switch in the access layer of Metropolitan Area Network、the central machine room of garden area、Building and even floor, which leads to high cost、complex management and low utilization. EPON technology can greatly decrease the needs of active equipments by setting ONU in the building or floor according to the needs. It has many advantages such as flexible network structure、convenient management and few kinds of equipments, also, helpful to increase the demands of the equipments. The integration of EPON and VDSL doesn’t need to reconstruct the twisted-pair in the building, because VDSL can transfer information with high speed through ordinary telephone line, which greatly reduces the investment risk. 

At last, adopting EPON technology can implement FTTH step by step. At the first stage of Broad Band access business, network structure established through using EPON and ADSL/VDSL technology can implement the full coverage of ADSL and VDSL in a short time, satisfying ordinary user’s simple bandwidth needs, and also, can economically connect business users to Wide Band through making use of ONU, implementing FTTB and FTTO. As the aging of Gigabit Ethernet technology、the decreasing of the equipment cost and the boosting of users’ demand for FTTH, the present EPON system can upgrade to Gigabit EPON.
