1. Flexible network construction by using optical fiber, can implement: 

1) point-to-point。Establish a high speed channel between two computers. The transmission rate can up to several Mbps or even hundreds of Mbps and transmission distance 2 km (multi-mode) and 5km (single-mode)。

2) Construct a network structure. Establish a star network topology through optical fiber equipment.


3) Ring network structure. Connect the signal regenerator through optical fiber to form a ring channel. 


2. Notice that the ports are different when connecting the fiber media converters to different equipments. 

1) Connection between fiber media converter and 100BASE-TX equipment (switch、hub):
Be sure the length of twisted-pair is not mort than 100m; connect one side of the twisted pair to RJ45 interface (Uplink interface) of the fiber media converter, and the other side to RJ45 interface (common interface) of 100BASE-TX equipment (switch、hub)。

2) Connection between fiber media converter and 100BASE-FX equipment:
Be sure the length of optical fiber is compatible with the transmission distance equipments can supply; connect one side of the optical fiber to SC/ST interface of the fiber media converter, and the other side to SC/ST interface of 100BASE-FX equipment. 


3.The design of optical fiber keeps to the following steps: 

1) Make clear what kind of network structure is going to be designed、how about the actuality and why choose optical fiber。

2) Choose appropriate optical network equipment、optical cable、patch cord and other goods used for connection, according to practical situation. By the way, it is better to choose these goods at the base of useable ness, then take the capability、price、service、origin and brand into consideration, to make a sound decision.

3) Confirm the route of the line according to customers’ requirement and network type and make the network topology.

4) Need to calculate the attenuation when the line is long, following the formula:
attenuation allowance =transmitting optical power –receiving sensitivity-line attenuation-connect attenuation (dB)
Line attenuation =length of optical cable × unit attenuation;
Unit attenuation is greatly related to quality of optical fiber, usually, single-mode 0.4~0.5dB/km;multi-mode 2~4dB/km。
